software engineer jobs in Australia 2026

Current SEEK listings show 1,600+ software engineer vacancies across Australia, with opportunities in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and other locations. (SEEK Australia)

1. Start with Australian job sites

The most useful starting point is:

SEEK Australia – Software Engineer Jobs

Also search for variations of the role:

  • Software Engineer

  • Software Developer

  • Full-Stack Developer

  • Backend Developer

  • Frontend Developer

  • Java Developer

  • Python Developer

  • .NET Developer

  • DevOps Engineer

  • Cloud Engineer

  • AI/ML Engineer

Don't search only “Software Engineer” because Australian employers use many different job titles.

2. Use LinkedIn strategically

Create a LinkedIn profile that clearly shows:

Software Engineer | Java / Python / React / AWS | Melbourne, Australia

Then make your location your actual Australian city.

Your profile should contain:

  • 3–5 key technical skills

  • Professional experience

  • GitHub

  • Portfolio

  • LinkedIn projects

  • Education

  • Certifications

  • Australian phone number, if applicable

  • Work-right/visa information where appropriate

3. Build an Australian-style CV

For software engineering, I would generally keep the CV concise and achievement-focused, rather than writing a very long CV.

For each job, show results such as:

Developed a REST API using Java Spring Boot that supported 50,000+ monthly requests.

rather than:

Responsible for Java programming.

Include the technologies you actually use:

Languages: Java, Python, JavaScript, TypeScript
Frontend: React, Angular
Backend: Spring Boot, Node.js, .NET
Database: PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB
Cloud: AWS, Azure, GCP
DevOps: Docker, Kubernetes, GitHub Actions
Tools: Git, Linux, Jira

4. GitHub is particularly useful

For someone looking for a software engineering position, a good GitHub profile can demonstrate practical ability.

For example, create 3–5 strong projects:

Project 1 — Full-stack application

  • React

  • Node.js/Spring Boot

  • PostgreSQL

  • Docker

Project 2 — Cloud application

  • AWS/Azure

  • REST API

  • CI/CD

Project 3 — AI application

  • Python

  • LLM API

  • RAG

  • Vector database

Project 4 — Microservices

  • Java/Spring Boot

  • Docker

  • Docker Compose

The README should explain what you built, why you built it, architecture, technologies and how to run it.

5. Apply directly to Australian companies

Don't rely exclusively on job boards.

Search company career pages for:

  • Banks

  • Insurance companies

  • Telecommunications companies

  • Healthcare companies

  • Universities

  • Government contractors

  • SaaS companies

  • FinTech companies

  • AI companies

  • Technology consultancies

Current SEEK results, for example, include software engineering roles with organizations such as Raytheon Australia, Boeing Defence Australia and research/technology organizations. (SEEK Australia)

6. Check your work rights

This is very important if the person is already in Australia.

Being physically in Australia does not automatically mean someone can work for every employer. The person's visa conditions determine what work they can undertake.

If they are looking at skilled migration or employer-sponsored pathways, Australia's Department of Home Affairs currently distinguishes between ANZSCO versions depending on the visa. For example, the 2022 ANZSCO version is used for the Skills in Demand (subclass 482) and Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) programs. (Immigration and citizenship Website)

Software Engineer is listed as ANZSCO 261313 on the current Core Skills Occupation List. (Immigration and citizenship Website)

For migration-related assessment, ACS explains that its Migration Skills Assessment evaluates relevant ICT qualifications and/or work experience against the nominated occupation. (ACS)

So before applying for sponsored positions, check the person's exact visa and work conditions rather than assuming sponsorship is required or available.

7. Don't ignore graduate/junior positions

If the person recently graduated in Australia, search:

  • Graduate Software Engineer

  • Junior Software Engineer

  • Graduate Developer

  • Software Engineer Graduate Program

  • Junior Full-Stack Developer

  • Associate Software Engineer

Current SEEK listings include graduate software engineering positions, including a graduate role in Sydney and a graduate program in Melbourne. (SEEK Australia)

A practical 30-day strategy

Week 1

  • Improve Australian-style CV

  • Update LinkedIn

  • Clean up GitHub

  • Create a professional portfolio

Week 2

  • Apply to 5–10 suitable positions each day

  • Contact recruiters

  • Connect with Australian software engineers on LinkedIn

Week 3

  • Practise technical interviews

  • Practise coding problems

  • Prepare behavioural interview answers

  • Research companies before interviews

Week 4

  • Follow up on applications

  • Continue applying

  • Attend technology meetups/networking events

  • Improve projects based on job descriptions

One important point: don't send the same CV to every job. If a position emphasizes Java/Spring Boot/AWS, make those skills prominent. If another emphasizes React/TypeScript, adapt the CV accordingly.
